Sidewalk Specials is a no-shelter foster-based rescue organization located in Cape Town, South Africa. Despite their small size and limited resources, they have been able to change the lives of numerous dogs. One of which is a senior stray that was later named Kettle.
They rescued home from Hout Bay Harbour after they received reports about a senior dog that was in terrible shape. After getting him a foster home and getting back his health, he was adopted and started living with a loving family on their farm.
Shortly after getting kettle his forever home, Sidewalk Specials received a call informing them that Kettle has a sister and is living in the harbor too. The group decided to seek her out and rescue her as well.
They formed a team and went to the harbor. It didn’t take long to locate the pup. Seeing that she was weak and thin, they gave her some food and water first. They also wanted to gain her trust so that she would go with them.
But that was not the case. After she devoured the food they gave her, she refused to follow them. Instead, she walked away. But she wasn’t running away from them. She moved slowly and stopped to look back.
It was as if she was telling them to follow her. So they did.
Just around the corner, sitting by a car was another dog. Kettle’s sister went straight to her and sat by her side. he was letting her rescuers know that they should take her as well.
The other dog was emaciated and looked like she was used for breeding. She was weak and shivering from the cold. And although they didn’t have the resources to save two dogs, they knew that they couldn’t leave her behind.
So they took the dogs with them and quickly set out to find foster homes for them. Thankfully, they were able to find temporary housing.
The even greater news is that the two dogs, now named Gracie and Hope, were eventually adopted together.
